Migrating User Profile from Windows XP to Windows 7

May 7, 2009 Kent Chen

Moving user profile from one computer to another on same operation system is never easy, migrating from one OS to another is even harder because the file structure may be diff in different OS. It’s always been a challenger to either end user or IT pros.

Here is a step by step Silverlight video up on Technet that shows in detail how to use the User State Migration Tool (USMT) to migrate user files and settings (aka user profiles) from Windows XP to Windows 7 using a default installation. You can also download the video in WMV format as well if you don’t like install Silverlight on your computer.

Just add the .v2 extension to the old XP roaming profile folder and have the user log into the Vista or WIndows 7 machine. Done. The new profile is roughly 10% bigger, but it's simple and you can script it to do the whole server.

I’m pretty much impressed with the stability of Windows 7. It is better than windows Vista which hogs my memory and cpu.’~~

I dont understand this, THIS IS A UPGRADE !!!!!
What if you have a old pc with your profile on it and you want to have that profile on your NEW W7 pc(new hardware).
Back in the good old days you could copy your profile and past it in the new doc&settings and voila you got your profile on your new pc.(in a domain)

This does NOT work for Window 7

Does anyone know how to get your profile from a xp to a w7 so old hardware to new hardware????

Well, this User State Migration tool mentioned in this post is exactly what you need.

Or, you can use easy transfer to migrate the profile as well. http://www.windows7hacker.com/index.php/2009/08/how-to-using-easy-transfer-to-migrate-data-between-xp-vista-windows-7/.

Note that there is no upgrade path from XP to Windows 7, nor the user profile structure looks the same. So if you want to use your old user profile these are the two easy options.

      Cheers.
