A List of FREE iOS Apps Officially Released by Microsoft

6

Even though the majority stuff we are covering here is Windows, that doesn’t mean that we can’t be a fan of any other things. In fact, both Jonathan and I are a huge fan of Apple’s iOS devices, iPhone in particular. Because of this, we are happy to see the trend in which Microsoft has become more involved in the mobile platform with the number of official apps growing. This is a complete list of iOS apps developed and released by them as of end of 2011. If I missed anything, feel free to drop a line in the comment. If you hadn’t used any of them, give them a shot.

Note that I didn’t provide the links to the app below, since searching it in the app store would be a trivial job anyway.

Microsoft Lync 2010

Released on December 20, 2011. Lync 2010 for iPhone brings the power of Lync to your pocket on the road. Microsoft Lync 2010 for iPhone requires a Lync Server or Office365/Lync Online account and will not work without it.

SkyDrive

This is Microsoft’s bet on cloud computing. We have covered it here and found it’s still got a big room to improve. But regardless, if you are using SkyDrive to store your files, photos, you should have it on your mobile device too. Having information right at your fingertips is always a good thing.

Photosymth

“Crazy amazing”, David Pogue, technology columnist for the New York Times Gizmodo’s App of the Day, April 18th, 2011.

It’s the panorama creation app that makes it easy and fun to capture and share interactive panoramas of the places, people, and events that are important to you. If you own an iPhone but never took a panorama type of shots, you are missing one of amazing things iPhone can do. Highly recommended.

Microsoft Tag

It’s Microsoft’s version of bar code reader on iPhone. But how well does it work? I am not so sure, to be honest, since I found the bar code reading app doesn’t work well if you are not in US. But it’s free, so no harm to give it a try.

Bing

Don’t forget Microsoft also does search ! But remember the Bing app only available in the US. For people outside the US the Bing app is not visible in the App Store. Compare to the Google app, Bing looks more sleek (metro UI like) in terms of formatting the information it retreats, too bad for those live outside the US, you are out luck unless you jailbreak your iOS device.
