Do you know Windows 8 has an addition button on Login Screen that can reveal the password you have just typed in the password box? Called Password Reveal Button officially, it’s an eye-like little icon sitting inside the password box, once clicked, it reveals the text you’ve just typed in the password box (Figure 1). It might be a useful feature to help you not type in the wrong password too many times but it also expose the chance for someone who might look over you shoulder to find out your secret.
So is there a way to disable this feature to prevent this from happening? The answer is yes and you can do so through a Group Policy setting change. Let’s follow along.
1. Launch Local Group Policy Editor, by pressing Win+R, typing “gpedit.msc“, and hitting Enter.
2. Go to Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components, and select Credential User Interface (Figure 2).
3. Then double click the policy Do not display the password reveal button, tick Enable radio button. And click OK to complete the operation (Figure 3).
That’s it. The change takes affect immediately. From this point on, the tricky Password Reveal Button will be disappeared, until next time this policy is disabled again.
Hi, I tried this and can’t get past the first step – when I enter gpedit.msc it says “Windows cannot find gpedit.msc make sure you have spelt it correctly” etc etc which I have done….also, this icon only appeared a few days ago, it was not there before and I did NOT put it there. What am I supposed to do? My gmail was hacked last week – has my entire computer been done over now?
There are two ways by which you can hide the Password reveal button one is registry and other one is group policy take a look at here for the steps http://www.techken.in/home/disable-password-reveal-button-windows-8/
