How To Fix Google Chrome “Your Profile Could Not Be Opened Correctly” Hang During Sign In Sync

Chrome is great. It automatically updates itself without us knowing it. For most of people, it shouldn’t be an issue when it comes to loading your personal settings to Chrome. But if you like to play around different release channels, then you might run into situations where Chrome wasn’t able to load your profile correctly. It happened to me the other day, when I downgraded from Dev-channel to Stable channel. It gave me the following warning messages every time when I open the Chrome, basically telling me that

“Your profile could not be opend correctly.

Some features may be unavailable. Please check that the profile exists and you have permission to read and write its contents.”

It wasn’t a very helpful warning message. Although it didn’t cause any browsing issues, it did cause Chrome unable to sync with my personal settings. If you are encountering the same problem,

Here is How to Fix the Profile Error (If Sign In Sync is Enabled)

1. Close chrome

2. Navigate to %APPDATA%\Local\Google\Chrome

3. Remove everything under User Data

Now launch Chrome again, you will start with a blank default profile. All your previous settings, bookmarks will be gone, but since you have everything synced with the cloud. You should now be able to sign-in and sync all the settings back.

If you don’t have Chrome sign-in to sync settings turned on, then unfortunately there isn’t much you can do other than make a backup of your existing User Data and hoping it can be restored after the default profile is generated by Chrome.

  1. I had the same problem. Tried everything, including new profile, de-install Chrome (completely, every file, every favourite, every related app data, cleaned the registry of dead bits…, Norton deep scan, System Mechanic deep scan, turn of auto-starts) and still the same error message, couldn’t set default search engine, extensions wouldn’t work…

Turns out AVG had invaded my system with ‘trial’ software. I am very careful about such stuff – never put it on my ‘work’ machine unless it first passes muster on my personal machine… Somehow, AVG wormed its way in. Perhaps its opt-in invitation was ‘hidden’ among other check boxes. Perhaps it uses the opt-out method vs opt-in…

This isn’t the 1st time AVG has wormed itself into one of my systems.

Turns out one little piece of AVG was still in my system.

Use the best most comprehensive de-installer you can find or buy and get everything AVG related out of your system. The Windows de-installer process may not be sufficient. You’ve gotta dig deep to get all the AVG bits out of your system. Disabling AVG will not likely be sufficient. You’ve gotta root it out and kill it dead. If you can’t do so on your own you’ll have to step up and hire an expert.

The error message will stop and then you can set your de-fault search engine and re-install your extensions and they will hold.

Moral of the story: STAY AWAY FROM ANYTHING AVG. (I apologize for hollering, but it’s for your own good. 🙂 )

  2. This is how you can achieve most of the objectives you have in mind.
Maintenance in your properties is vital when trying
to square out from your competition. Lastly, in both property investing and little league, you may need batting practice.
