Say if there are hundreds and thousands of folders and each contains additional subfolders and files, it has grown increasingly difficult to navigate and you need to merge them into just one folder, how would you approach to do that in Windows Explorer?
Cut and Paste could be a great solution only if there aren’t this many files and folders. Computers are great at doing dumb repeating tasks that we humans are horrible at doing. While Windows Explorer offers a good GUI solution for file management operations like this, manually go through all the files would require hundreds and thousands of mouse clicks. There got to be other solutions that are much efficient? Time to brush up Windows command prompt? No, too much time spend on just try to get the code working the way you need.
There is a better solution, Folder Merger
This amazing tool, Folder Merger, is designed just for this use case, and it’s great at it! It can turn your folders and files from what’s like on the left to right.
Make sure you have downloaded and extracted the utility.
First, start by select the root folder of all the sub-folders and files you’d like to merge from.
From here, you can select all the folders you need to merge and click “Add selected folders” will recursively find all the sub-folders and list all the files from each sub-folder.
Here is an example that I’m selecting only two of the folders and its sub-folder and files that I’d like to merge.
Once that’s done you need to find where you want all the merged files to go. *Important*, you can’t select it’s original parent folder. It has to be a completely different empty folder with nothing inside. That means, the files to be merged will be duplicated under this new folder. If you don’t have enough space for your files to be duplicated, you can break it down into the smaller batch and cut and paste after it’s done.
Click Merge now to start the operation now or you can click to “Create batch file” that will create you a .bat file that you can run at a later time.
Notice there is an option to rename the files if it found duplicated file names, but if you’d like to use this operation to discard those duplicated files make sure to uncheck “Rename / enumerate files with duplicated titles” option so other files with the same name will be overridden and lost during the operation.
That’s it, when this operation is completed you will be left with one folder contains all the files and subfolders file in ONE folder.
