How to setup Bluetooth device pairing with Windows 7

51

Ever since Apple has enabled the Bluetooth to stream music wireless on iPhone years ago, I have been always fascinated by the fact that you can now listen to music without having the annoying wire around you. You can actually do the same on Windows too. Here is what I’ve done with the Bluetooth streaming on my Acer Aspire 5580 laptop pairing with LG HBS-200 Stereo Headphone set in Windows 7 RC.

Before I start here is the different version of Windows that Supports* the A2DP (taken from wiki)

  • Windows XP: Does not natively support A2DP, but newer Bluetooth USB dongles and built-in adapters include drivers with A2DP support.
  • Windows Vista: Does not support A2DP natively, but third-parties can provide A2DP profile support without entirely replacing Microsoft’s stack. Service Pack 2 adds Bluetooth 2.0 capabilities.
  • Windows 7: RC no longer includes a Bluetooth audio class driver (However, do support A2DP)

Since my laptop is a lower end of the Acer Aspire series it does not have Bluetooth hardware built in. What I did was go to eBay and bought a USB Bluetooth dongle and with a week and a half waiting here it is. It’s cheap. You can get it for under $2 plus free shipping. I’ve also bought the LG HBS-200 to test out the A2DP music stream.

Step 1 Plug in the USB Bluetooth dongle if you don’t have Bluetooth build in

After you’ve plugged in Windows will automatically find the right driver for you. As you can see here the driver is successfully installed.

Step 2

Type “Bluetooth” in the start menu bluetoothsetup - How to setup Bluetooth device pairing with Windows 7

Click for Add a Bluetooth device, in the meantime, make sure your Bluetooth headphone is on.

Windows will automatically search for your device. With any luck, your device should be listed below. [Note: If you need to enter any passcode try 0000 that’s the default for most of the Bluetooth device out there, if doesn’t work, check the user menu of your device.]

Go to control panel > Hardware and Sound > Device and Printer > Bluetooth Devices You should be able to see your device here, and test out the sound settings etc. Make sure you’ve chosen the Bluetooth headphone for playback and you are now good to go! Enjoy

If the device is having difficult to be paired next time, here is how you can reconnect a paired Bluetooth audio device with your computer.

    • the quality is pretty good actually, battery life last pretty long. I think it last longer than it claim 8 hrs. But some how my ear hurts when wear this kind headphone. It works perfect with Blackberry, all the function works volume up/down next/prev song, but for iPhone (I think its the Apple’s problem they still need to work on their Bluetooth) the volume is pretty loud it set by default in the middle can’t adjust the volume down, only turn the volume up 🙁 no prev/next song control from the headphone.

Over all its cool to have a headphone that has no wire. But can’t use 100% of its function with iPhone.

For iPod touch 2G can’t use it to skype call 🙁 well at least not for now.

  1. Does the LG HBS-200 allow pairing in both mono and stereo at the same time?
[I have a motorola S805 and it is either a A2DP headphone or a mono headset, witch is ok when using it on the mobile phone but not so great on the PC.]

  2. I got the message that no drivers could be found for a2dp. Then I installed drivers by letting Win 7 search on the old Vista partition (it found the drivers and installed them without a murmur). Now I can connect to a2dp devices successfully.

BUT: They do not show up in the sound device list shown above. So still no sound.

    Any hints?

  3. i have my device paired but i when i open up my sound settings i dont see my device there. how do i add the device to my sound settings?

    • Once I downloaded the Integrated Module with Bluetooth Update for my HP laptop, my bluetooth headset works great with my laptop, both audio and microphone. I didn’t have to reboot Windows 7 Enterprise.

  4. I have done this with my HP Tx2z and it all works……until I turn the headset off. Later, when I try to reconnect them the dongle device has shutoff the ability to detect devices and when I tick this option windows cannot sucide because the detectability driverswere not saved and I hav to delete and reinstall the devices to get the headset working again.

    • true, sometimes it tend to forget and will be hard to reconnect. I use to remove and reinstall bluetooth headphone device too, but there is a trick that works for me make sure your bluetooth headphone is set to default when you are connected. and also if you bluetooth connect to other device while you are disconnect with your computer it will not automatically search and connect. Because your headphone will only remember the last time the device that you've been connected to.

So make sure you set to default in “Sound option” and don't connect to any other device while it's off and have your bluetooth services on before you power back up your headphone again. This will it should automatically reconnect again, I can't say it will work 100% cuz every headphone are designed differently, and it also makes a difference when you are on bluetooth 2.1 and 2.0

      hope those helps, cheers

  5. I am trying to connect my blue tooth Motorola cell phone to my laptop running
Win 7. However neither by blue tooth or USB cable does the laptop recognize the phone.

I also have motorola Phone Tools which doesn't recognize the phone.

    Any ideas?

  6. Hello,

I just got the LG HBS-200 and when I pair it with my USB Bluetooth adapter it tries to search for drivers but it can't find it. This is on Windows 7 64-bit. Anyone know what the solution to this is? Also, is it required to have Bluetooth 2.0 compatible USB receiver before I can use the headset? My usb bluetooth adapter is pretty old and its most likely bluetooth 1.0.

    thanks!

  8. This might be a stupid question but I am trying to sync my Bluetooth devices together. I have the inspiron E1405 laptop, Hp deskjet 6980, and motorola droid. I have done this before but ever since I updated from windows xp to windows 7 my free flying BT days are gone =(… My driver detector says I need a BT peripheral device for the BT remote control, BT L2cap interface, and BT hands free audio. ugh, Any advice?

Side note: I don’t have my windows xp cd to reinstall on my laptop…

  9. I have a problem with it from the very start where you go to ‘Ad a bluetooth device’.

It just doesn’t exist on this computer.

  10. IS it possible to play music through bluetooth and 3,5mm cable at same time?

I have cable connection to amplifier and I want same music outside with bluetooth adapter. Is there any software to do that or what should I do? I can only choose is music heard throug cable or bluetooth.

  11. Microsoft is no stranger to having partners galore within the cellphone enterprise, however its lineup of producers for the upcoming, surprisingly promising Windows Phone 7 launch is no less impressive. After loads of rumoring, Microsoft has confirmed that Dell and HTC can be making Home windows Phone 7 phones, along with ASUS, LG, and Samsung who had already been confirmed. All of these corporations ought to have their stamp on hardware by the top of the year, with the launch of the OS still vaguely slated for the “holidays” We have now little question that each one five producers can construct some compelling, attractive hardware, however we’re significantly enthused to see Dell actually stepping into the sport after the spectacular Streak and that drool worthy leak a little while back. learn more at http://www.wp7forum.com followers group.

  12. Whilst I like a physical keyboard, after coping with the Samsung Captivate for approximately quarter-hour, it’s laborious to head back. Presently I’m debating whether to go to Verizon for the Droid X, pass to Dash for the EVO, or stick with AT&T for the Captivate…choices, decisions.

  13. My nokia 5300 music express or e51 are not discovered even after full searching is done by blue tooth search. My dongle shows properly installed.

  14. I’m getting very frustrated with my Bluetooth headset now.

I have succesfully paired it, even had it working fully, but now it’s gone off and won’t come back on.

By off, I mean I can’t get any audio through it…windows believes it’s still paired and working fine (it even shows me the volume bar moving up and down when I’m playing my music), but all I can hear is a low hissing noise.
The fact it was working just annoys as obviously nothing has changed (that I can see) as to why it now won’t work.

  15. I can connect my playstation headset, so that confirms it working as it should. It does not connect to my HTC One S tho 🙁

  16. Hello there, I’ve been trying to pair my Lenovo t420 to a Plantronics Discovery975, but Win7 cannot find it. I see here that Win7 does not come with the correct Bluetooth drivers or profiles… how do I fix this? Do I just need a USB bluetooth adapter or (considering that Bluetooth is enabled and working on my PC) can I fix the situation somehow?

  17. thanks for guiding, i bought an I ball bluetooth reciver for speaker BTR 009 for my home theater, glad that i dont need to use any wires when connecting any device wid it, it has just cecome so simple. and absolutely no compromise on sound quality
