Installing Windows Updates requires an active internet connection to download the available updates onto your computer. If your computer isn’t connected to the internet it can not be updated. But we all know that in order to keep our computers working properly we need to have them stay updated. What are the options for those that don’t have access to the Internet but still need to stay with the latest update?

Portable Update is a portable free tool that lets you store update installation files onto a portable USB devices and apply them to other Windows computers without the necessity of to be connected to the network. It works with almost all Windows systems, both desktop, and server operating systems, from Windows 2000 all the way to Windows 8. Both 32-bit and 64-bit editions are supported.

How does it work?

To update a computer that doesn’t have an internet connection, Portable Update uses an external cache that stores all necessary updates. The cache can be on any USB external devices, such as external hard drive or flash drive. The same updates stored in the cache can be applied to all other computers later on.

To start

Download Portable Update and run it on a computer that has access to the Internet first. You will need to click the Start button on the main window to download the necessary components to the device.

Verdict

I’ve been using Microsoft’s own WSUS to distribute Windows updates in a LAN setup but haven’t seen a 3rd party tool like Portable Tool that makes Windows Update a portable application to apply them to those computers that don’t have internet access. It’s a well-done tool that’s is going to be a useful not only for disconnected computers but also to a small network that doesn’t have the resource to set up their own WSUS server, or in a situation where internet connection speed is too low to download those updates online.

  1. I do not understand how it could possibly get the proper updates for other computers in network, when they are a mix of releases, CPUs and OS versions.

  2. Hi team,

Behind TO START Paragraph there is spelling mistake “Portabe Update” it is “Portable Update” kindly correct it, it will help for others…

  3. Your last screen shot shows nothing in the Install list. This is my situation after I completed all the previous steps in your “how to”. How is one supposed to update the computer not connected to the internet if there are no updates showing in the Install list??

  4. Install requires that initial install be on a removable drive….but “connected” computer. …ok my computer is connected… so why is the program not detecting that it is
