But that still doesn’t answer what exactly it’s doing when Windows 8 is running automatic maintenance. Well there is a quick way to find that out . While maintenance is running, you can go to the newly enhanced Task Manager to take a peak at what processors your machine is currently consuming most of the CPU or memory. This usually leads to a good indication at what the automatic maintenance is doing.

  1. This message of maintenance in progress has been there for a week, and it still appears. is this how long it usually take?

  2. When it runs on my laptop, all I mostly see running is the Search Protocol Host, Search Filter Host, System and System Interrupts. I keep my own machine running clean and defrag regularly. It also runs for-ever and I ALWAYS have to manually stop it. Back to Task manager to turn this crap off!

  3. I tied it all – It just keeps on coming back – no 1 AM wakeup of machine – just whenever it wants – as I am on the macjhine – as if it has a mind of its own to just slow down my machine

  4. I have been already scanned with windows defender just now. after finish it, maintenance progress on action center is gone by itself
