Windows 7 and 8 have a pretty good feature built in monitoring the Hard Drive health in real time but what it lacks is an easy to understand user interface that displays the first-hand information about your hard drive. CheckDrive, developed by Abelssoft, is a system utility that monitors hard drive health in real time with a simply and easy-to-understand user interface. It detects and fix hard drive errors that might appear on system crashes or when switching off your PC without a proper Windows shutdown.
CheckDrive, currently in version 2013, is developed by Abelssoft, has a free version that runs on all major Windows system, from XP and Up, on both 32bit and 64bit editions. The free version requires a free registration that begs for your email address to unlock the program.
The main program does 2 things, checking the installed hard drives health and displaying the information about the drive. The screenshot above displays my main SSD hard drive’s information. The screenshot below shows off the health of one of my hard drives.
The other feature that comes with this free version of Hard Drive utility is the real-time monitoring. And that’s why you will find its agent, namely CheckDrive Background Guard, running in the background. You will also find an application icon sitting in the system tray indicating that it’s running. Right-clicking it will reveal a few options that you can do with it.
Overall, CheckDrive 2013 Free is a simply tool you can put in use to monitor your mission critical hard drive without sacrificing too much of the computer power. It eats 13MB of my RAM while it runs on my Windows 8 computer.
While combining with Abelssoft’s another tool, FolderVisualizer, you can get even more information about the used disk space. FolderVisualizer is a tool that quickly finds space wasting files within seconds.
