Paint.net is a popular free image and photo editing software for Windows, a rival to Adobe Photoshop on Windows. Developed on the .NET platform, Paint.net was originally started as a university student project back in 2004, intended to be a free replacement for the Microsoft Paint. It has grown into a powerful photo editing software on Windows as an independent software.

Now after being a long time traditional desktop app, Paint.net has arrived on Windows Store since the release of version 4.0.18. One big difference, it’s no longer free of charge anymore. The standard price is currently at $8.99, on sale right now for $4.99 until the end of October. As usual, you can also use the 30-day free trial to get started.

As Paint.net’s blog post points out, placing a price tag on the Store release allows many things to converge and solves a lot of problems. It’s worth checking out what the Store release has to offer for the extra cost.

If purchasing the app isn’t your type of thing, you can still keep using the classic release, aka the desktop app, as it will remain free-of-charge and will still be kept up-to-date on the same schedule as the Store release. There is no difference between the desktop app and the new Store release. The store version supports the plugins as well. So unless you are using Windows 10 S edition, you can still use the free desktop version.

Paint.net also encourages for those to still send a donation as a way of providing financial support. This is actually more effective as Microsoft does take a 30% cut of every transaction that goes through their Store.
