With the introduction of Windows 10, Microsoft introduced the concept of Windows-as-a-Service (WaaS). That is when you will continuously receive updates, not just those security patches but also new feature packs released periodically with Windows 10. That means the Windows 10 shipped last year vs. the Windows 10 from this month will have significant features and functionality differences. If you have already upgraded to Windows 10, you are already on the beneficial side of this WaaS. However, the upgrade you will receive from Microsoft as a released Windows 10 is much less frequent comparing to people who have joined the Windows 10 Insider Program.
Windows 10 Insider Program is for those who lives on the bleeding edge of tech, if you wish to try out new features before they are released to the general public, then this is where you can start. Also, don’t worry if this will cause your Windows 10 to be on the edge of buggy code, you can opt out anytime when you don’t want to receive the latest feature.
How To Join Windows 10 Insider Program
Go to Settings > Update & Security > Advanced options
Scroll down to “Get Insider Preview builds”. If you don’t have your Windows 10 setup using Microsoft account, you need to connect your Windows 10 and log in with MS account. If you have already used Microsoft account as the login of Windows 10, then you can click “Get started” to proceed to the next step.
You will be prompt to acknowledge the consequence of installing pre-release software, click Next to continue.
Confirm once more.
Lastly, restart your machine to take this change into effect.
After restarting your Windows 10, you will see now the “Get Insider Preview builds” have a new section where you can choose the frequency and relative tested level of the new feature. By default you will be on “Release Preview” channel, this is for those
who enjoy seeing early access to updates for the Current branch, Microsoft Applications, and drivers with minimal risk to their devices, and still want to provide feedback to make Windows devices great.
If you are a die heart fan of Windows 10 and want to live on the real bleeding edge, the Fast channel will give you
the first to identify issues, provide suggestions, and ideas to make Windows device great.
That’s it, now go back to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, you will see the new updates coming up and be able to upgrade to the latest preview in your channel of the choice.
