Windows 10 Tip: How To Set Up Audio Preferences Per App

3

In case you aren’t aware, Microsoft has added some pretty cool new audio features with Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803). It lets you customize both the input and output audio devices per application. For example, you can set it up so that Spotify music is blasting out from your speakers while the audio from your Chrome browser come through your headset by default.

Here is how to do it.

Go to Settings > System > Sound, scroll down to the bottom and click App Volume and device preferences section.

At the top, you can set up the Master volume and default Output and Input device from the drop-down list.

Then, the section below. That is where you can set up different input/output audio device for each separate app listed there.

Default means whatever the device is selected at the top next to Master volume. If you have multiple audio devices connected to your Windows device, you can pick your preference from the drop-down list.

I found this new feature is super useful to me while I am at work. I have a pair of speakers on my desk but always have a headset hung on my ear for phone calls. Before I always had to switch the audio device from the taskbar when I needed to use the headset for listening to webinars. Now, with this new audio feature, I can easily set up the browser audio through my headset while still keeping my Spotify streaming out the background music through the speakers on my desk.

If you have upgraded to Windows 10 April 2018 Update, be sure to check out.

  1. Hi Kent, this is great news and long overdue. Thanks for the write-up.

I don’t have 1803 yet, I guess it’s another phased rollout. I suppose I could force the issue, but that doesn’t sound like me 🙂

Anyway, I appreciate this and all the handy tips your team reports.

  2. There seems to be an issues with this feature and chrome or chromium edge.
Although I selected my headset as default for my browsers, the first time I start a video it is ignoring this setting.
When I check the settings again and start the video It’s using the settings.
Anyone nows a fix for this?
