In this case, I can pick a book from my local copy.

Overall, Bookviser is a well polished ePub reader for Windows 8. It’s free to download, and highly customizable. Best of all, it can read your own ePub books that you have already downloaded or purchased from else where. If you like to read, don’t miss this app, go check it out and support the developer. This is a crap epub reader. It doesn’t even let you view the book vertically. It’s all horizontal. That’s retarded. And there is no highlighting. So far Reader Pro is the best Windows has.
If you are on a PC or laptop – why would you want to read a book in vertical? You flip your monitor? 99% of monitors are landscape… so, have a 2 page horizontal view makes sense to me.
I’m guessing you don’t know what a tablet is. Because that is what I read epub and pdf files on. A tablet. They are wonderful inventions.
