Torrex is a native Windows 8 App that lets you to download any torrent files and magnet links, just like what regular desktop BT client does, such as uTorrent. Not only that, it also has a media player built-in that allows you to stream video and audio playback without waiting for the download to complete. No more time wasted here during the download.
Because it’s a native Windows 8 App, it works on both Windows 8 and Windows RT computers. Perfect for my Surface RT tablet.
Torrex is a full-feature BitTorrent client. Once it’s installed, it becomes the default program to open your Torrent files.
Every time you open a torrent file, it lists the information what files are included in the torrent. You can pick which ones to download and which ones to ignore. Then tap or click the Start button at the top right corner to start the download process.
And as I mentioned earlier, you don’t have to wait until it’s finished to watch it. After fair amount of content has been downloaded, you can click the torrent file and start watching and enjoying what’s been download. I was able to play MP4 encoded file but haven’t got chance to test those MKV files.
Just like other desktop BitTorrent clients, you can also change the settings such as the default download location, maximum download and upload bandwidth, maximum number of active downloads, whether to encrypt the outgoing connection, listening port, etc. All these settings can be changed through Settings menu from the charm bar on the left side of your screen.
Torrex is a well-done Windows app for BitTorrent client. It not only has all the features I needed for a BT client, but also simply works. I was able to download a few torrents using this app on my Surface RT tablet without any issue. I would give 4 out of 5 starts for this app.
The only thing I want to complain is that it doesn’t work well in the background, meaning that you will have to leave it running in the front, either in full screen mode or in snap mode that stays active.
This warning message popped up on me a few times during my test basically telling me that the torrent has been suspended because it can not run at the background. It’s not very inconvenience. It’s not practical at all, especially on a RT tablet. I can’t just let it run in the front waiting for the download to finish on a tablet. Or, I would just do it on my regular desktop using uTorrent.
