Over the time we’ve covered a few number of free network tools for real-time network traffic monitoring in Windows. Let’s do a quick recap and take another look at these tools to see what’s still good out there.

GlassWire

GlassWire is the latest one we reviewed not too long ago. It’s a very neat network tool with loads of features that provides not only real-time network traffic monitoring but also internet security with built-in firewall capabilities. It’s got a pre-built firewall, usage report, and alerts that sent out as a brief notification balloon popping out of the system tray informing you what’s new just happened.

NetBalancer

NetBalancer is an internet traffic control and monitoring tool designed specifically for Windows systems, compatible from XP all the way to Windows 8, both 32-bit and 64-bit editions are supported. You can balance your internet activities based on the priorities set on each running application using this tool. The applications with higher priority gains more traffic bandwidth than those with a  lower number. The tool comes with 6 priority levels, from limit, ignore,block, to low, normal, and high, in each download and upload category. And you can manage them for each network adapter separately.

Cucusoft Net Guard

Cucusoft Net Guard is a network monitoring tool that monitors your internet broadband usage for you, and keeps tracking them closely with a detailed statement revealing how much usage has been utilized and what are the top software consuming them. With these data in hand, you easily identify how many of them are wasting your bandwidth and how much they have wasted, and therefore fix them to save your paid bandwidth for good use.

It’s also got an interesting feature that could be useful to those having a broadband internet package that has a usage cap.

Cucusoft Net Guard used to be sold for $30 but now is offered for FREE, with only one requirement that only costs you an email address.

Real Network Monitor

Real Network Monitor is a free network monitoring tool that monitors your local network activities in real-time. It reads all data from almost all kinds of network adaptors, whether it’s a LAN, or WiFi, or Bluetooth. As long as it’s part of the network, it can read it.

You can also run a benchmark test to check how fast your Internet speed is through Speed Test from the toolbar. Select one of the 3 options to start with, and the results will be back in about a couple of seconds.

NetTraffic

NetTraffic is a little network utility that monitors network traffic on all or selected network interfaces you have installed on your computer with a graph and numeric values showing in real-time. It’s free and works on all Windows platform, from XP all the way to Windows 8. Both 32-bit and 64-bit editions are supported.

It also tracks the data so that you can check out a history of your network activity in a Statistic window built-in the program. The data in the Statistics window also gets refreshed almost instantly.

Final words

Before you jump to any of these tools, don’t forget Windows also has a pretty good one built right out of the box. The network tab in Task Manage already shows you the network traffic in real-time. Not mention that the Network tab in Resource Monitor offers more detailed information about your network.

The tools mentioned above are the supplement addition to things you already use in Windows. They are mostly designed for Windows desktop systems, such as Windows 7, Windows 8 and 8.1, in a home network environment. They won’t fit well in a corporate network environment.

Personally I like how GlassWire is built and what it offers but others have some nice nifty features as well that could be very useful in certain situation.
